Wanna know something screwed up? http://www.myfoxdetroit.com/dpp/news/dte-worker-electrocuted-091111This substation was, according to an over the air news report, at 8 and evergreen, 2 miles from my work. At the time of the incident, our office experienced a brownout, as did a customer down the street according to our logs. kinda screwed up when you see stuff like that. As a worker at a utility (and a human being) my heart goes out to his family. Obviously the outside plant folks have a much more dangerous job than the inside plant people like myself, but honestly you should see some of the places us inside guys go too - the difference in risk doesn't always seem that great. (I've had to do a lot of live wiring on our -48v DC plant, and have worked near energized, open 480v 3 phase, and pulled wire near high voltage bus bars that go through building risers and basement utility areas. Always respect your utilities, one slip on or near power or gas lines could be your last. And though it wouldn't have helped this guy, I'll take this as an opportunity to plug 811. Always call 811 3 days before you dig. Even if you're just planting a bush or tilling land to make a garden. The call is free, the flagging is free. The life (or phone/cable/gas/sewer/water service) you save may be your own. (and if you dig up utilities, you're financially liable for the repairs, and in some states criminally liable for the damage) Current Mood: creepy |

Catch up
Let's see, what's been going on? - The first day we kenneled Charlie, he ate through the baby gate. I am not joking, he ripped a bar clean off and chewed through another couple. Matthew says, "at least we know his teeth are still good." Yeah, right. - So we are putting a diaper on him during the day. But I still can't be at work after 4:30 - because he needs to go out so frequently. VERY frustrating. Next time, small dogs no matter what. And girls. - My mother keeps charging all of the Christmas gifts she is buying on my credit card. I don't think I am going to get anybody anything myself, seeing as I have already bought them gifts. Between her, the dog, and Matthew's mother requiring money from me - I find myself at Target contemplating whether I should make a $10 purchase or not. Extremely sad. - I want to join the community center, but haven't found the energy, time or money to do so. It's not that I am destitute or anything. I have plenty in savings, but I like to put something from each paycheck into savings as well as not dip into it. So I just block that chunk of money out of my mind - it isn't an option to spend. I only look at what's left in my checking account to spend. PLUS I am trying to find funds out of my checking for our wedding, as well. I don't want to put wedding stuff on a credit card, because I should be able to get it from my normal pay. I don't want debt from the wedding, Matthew and I have plenty of that from school. I don't want to feel that I live outside of my means, yet with all of the dependencies, I feel like it is pretty stretched. That's the bottom line. I feel like I get paid pretty well, I shouldn't sacrifice any savings for any of this. |

Auction++
So a while ago, I attended a building supply auction. Often, I would be over-bid, especially on really large lots. If I was really interested, I would exchange contact info. Can't hurt. For this particular lot, I dropped out right away, as I could tell they really wanted it - no matter the cost. And I wasn't about to be a bastard about it and run up the price. Oh well, last I'll see of that, or so I thought. I got a call today out of the blue. Seems plans had changed, and they were wondering if I was interested in some or all of the lot. A lot of glass sandwiches (glass, gasket, argon, glass), for a special price. Yup, I can use about 36 of them right away in my basement. Of course, there's about 10 times the number I need, but the price is right. In an odd way, I'm still winning bids. Hmmm. Need to figure out what to do with the rest... |

Clean house!
So I finally just gave in and called a carpet cleaner yesterday. The spot bot and pro heat 2x weren't cutting it anymore. Local service, out of Chaska, very friendly guy. Gave me a deal on it, $89 with deodorizing treatment. Looks brand new! I love it. Will use him again. Hopefully, we can get the office cleaned upstairs and he can go the upstairs in Dec/Jan. So we are going to start kenneling Charlie in the laundry room for the day. Well, it is really only 5-6 hours. Since Matthew leaves at 11am and I get home around 5pm. I also joined LinkedIn and who did I find? My old boss at Kellogg's. Wants to buy me lunch when I am in town for the holidays - he is always very nice. But it will be good talking to him. |

Promotions
So...hung out with Emily last night after we were done volunteering at the food shelf. Got to know quite a few bits of wisdom. First, a little about promotions. This has always been a mystical subject, since none of our supervisors opening talk about it with us. But Emily, like me, asks the questions no one else asks and this is what she found out.... In marketing, when you are first hired out of college, you start as a Level 11. That is what I am currently. Every year that you are a Level 11 - you get a ~3.5% raise. After 2 years, you are made a Level 12, at that time you are given a ~6.5% raise. At a Level 13, you are made "SR Marketing Engineer", with a higher raise, etc. You can also speed up the process by moving to a different job that is a level higher than you are. For instance, if I am a Level 12 and I apply and get a Level 13 position, I become a Level 13. That is actually how most of the time it happens around here. Otherwise, you just wait it out in your current position and there is no guarantee if/when you will Level-up. This is all like a video game. And my grandmother thought my gaming skillz would never come in handy. Unfortunately, we instituted a one year hiring freeze and pay raise freeze, that means that I won't make a Level 12 for another year - so I will be here 3 years before I am a level 12. Which sucks. One of my other coworkers is in the same boat. They are just screwing us left and right. Next thing is the tuition reimbursement for getting your MBA. There are two routes, first the Executive Sponsorship. Where they pay everything, up front. Sounds nice, but there is an application process for that and eventually the President of the company signs off on it. Next, they pay $5250 every January until the total bill is paid off. Easier to do, anyone can do it, but you need the $5k up front to start. I think that I am going to shoot for University of St Thomas, starting Fall 2011, under an Executive Sponsorship. I just think that asking for it right now isn't right, considering the economy. And I don't want to drive all the way to U of MN. |
